In this workshop you will learn how to do free-motion embroidery using a sewing machine. This skill can be used to draw, to write, to add applique or to add textures to your textile creations.
You will learn how to set up your machine and how to master the basics of the technique. You will experiment with lines, patterns and textures to inspire your further free motion adventures.
We will then put these techniques into practice by creating a ladybird on plain fabric.
All the fabrics and bondaweb for the ladybird project will be included in your workshop fee. You will need to bring threads and some material for your practice samples. You will be provided with a short list of what to bring on booking. Sewing machines will be provided. Some fabrics will be available to purchase on the day.
Karen Brooking has always enjoyed being creative, but it was only when lockdown hit that she ventured into selling her work. Karen creates textile collages with floral and upcycled fabrics and embellishes them with free motion embroidery. She often uses her own hand-dyed fabrics as backgrounds.
Karen sells her art and stitched gifts at local exhibitions and craft fairs, including Chalks Gallery in Lymington and Christine’s Art House in Romsey.
She is an active member of Winchester Textiles and Embroidery Group and co-runs the Winchester Young Embroiderers Group.
